Headline Details: The ARKSAT-1 is a 1U cubesat (10cm x 10cm x 11.35 cm, 1.65kg) developed at the University of Arkansas, and is manifested on a Space-X Falcon 9 rocket launching out of Cape Canaveral Oct 30, 2020 as part of NASA’s 8th Cubesat Launch Initiative (CSLI- 8). The team is consisting of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and members of the Amateur Radio Club of the University of Arkansas (ARCUA), which is open to the public. The undergraduate students are predominantly honors research and senior castone design students (over 20 students in the past 3 years) from the College of Engineering while the graduate students belong to the PI research team. ARKSAT-1 will highlight the initial flight demonstration, operation of a high power LED for ground tracking, and testing of a simple, reliable, low-cost, and lightweight Solid State Inflatable Balloon deorbiting system applicable to small satellites. The SSIB is comprised of a solid state gas generator (SSGG), space compatible balloon film structure, and spacecraft integration subsystem. The SSGG is a 2D array of sodium azide crystals, which, when heated, produce N2 gas which will inflate the balloon. The heater system uses about 1W of power for less than 10 seconds, and the gas is generated within milliseconds. The inflated balloon will then greatly increase the aerodynamic drag on the satellite, reducing the amount of time a given satellite will be orbital debris after its mission has ended. The SSIB system is designed to reduce orbital lifetime of small satellites well within the FAA requirements of 25 years. Mission Phases: i) Initial flight demonstration and ground station communications operations for UA ii) Demonstrate operation of high-power LED for ground tracking purposes and test use of LORA receiver iii) Test small satellite deorbiting system in LEO space environment Proposing a downlink on 435MHz using 9k6 NBFM AX25 packet also a 902 MHz Lora receiver for user access.
