| Headline Details: SCALAR is a 1U CubeSat and our student club’s first ever satellite mission. Its serves to demonstrate that our club can successfully launch a satellite mission from initial planning to orbital operations. It also contains custom made magnetorquers, two torque rods and one embedded PCB board, which aim to demonstrate 3-axis ADCS control absent reaction wheels and propulsion systems. We will evaluate the success of the magnetorquers in their ability to generate simple rotational torque, verified by an onboard IMU, and in pointing accuracy via photodiodes on each face of the satellite. The nature of the mission is educational because all students involved begin with no knowledge of satellites and develop themselves through their work making the satellite real. Our mission contributes to the advancement of the amateur satellite service for one due to the increased interest and knowledge of the amateur satellite service. We are designing and building our own ground station as well as developing the communications procedures to communicate with our satellite, which has required our members to become invested in the amateur satellite service, obtain amateur radio licenses, and make connections in the amateur satellite community to gain advice and exchange knowledge to better the service as a whole. We are also planning to publish all of the design, documentation, schematics, and results of our custom ground station, allowing others in the amateur satellite service to learn from our successes and mistakes, and replicate our design if they which. This adds to the combined knowledge available to the amateur satellite service. We will also publish the results of our satellite mission, which as an amateur satellite will provide others with results from the study of our custom magnetorquers, the design of which will be published along with the availability of the devices we used to construct them. Amateur operators, if they are interested, will also be able to request our club to execute maneuvers utilizing the magnetorquers, providing they are reasonable in scope and don’t interfere with pre-scheduled maneuvers. This will allow the amateur community to see the results of our mission first hand and participate in our experiment. Proposing a UHF downlink using LoRa Chirp Spread Spectrum modulation at a data rate of 1760 bps. Planning a SpaceX launch from Vandenberg in Feb 2027 in to a 550km SSO.
