Headline Details: A 3U CubeSat. The AcubeSAT project is part of the “Fly your Satellite!” 3 programme, organized by ESA’s Education office. The programme aims to give the opportunity to students to design and create their own satellite, while at the same time to promote space-related projects in Greece, a concept yet unknown to most universities. The AcubeSAT project aims to contribute to the radioamateur community by providing resources, training material, and satellite access to radioamateurs. The project is an educational project with no financial interests and is fully open source from the ground up, which means that everyone can have access to our GitLab repositories (https://gitlab.com/acubesat) where we upload not only software related tasks, but also any documentation that we can publish online. The mission has been designed and manufactured by students based primarily at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and will be operated by a large number of licensed student radioamateurs. The team has 5 active licensed radioamateurs holding greek callsigns and has trained more than 13 radioamateurs throughout the years. Furthermore, all the data from AcubeSAT’s mission, be it housekeeping data, telemetry or images of the biological experiment, will be open and available to anyone wanting to downlink and examine them. In more detail, both the software as well as the hardware of the On Board Computer (OBC), Attitude Determination and Control (ADCS) and Science Unit (SU) subsystems are all developed by the team. The Electrical Power Subsystem (EPS) uses a Commercial-Off-The-Shelf board and the Communication subsystem uses the open-source SatNOGS COMMS board which is currently under development by Libre Space Foundation, while part of the software is also developed by the team. The patch antenna that is used in the S Band is also made in-house and made public for anyone to study or use, while the UHF antenna is a Commercial-Off-The-Shelf turnstile antenna. Our Ground Station antennas are based on Open Source designs and the design and simulation files are also uploaded on GitLab along with some information on our attempts at manufacturing the aforementioned antennas. Our Ground Station will be part of the SatNOGS network, making it accessible for everyone that is also part of the network. Furthermore, by having it built inside our university campus, every enthusiast will be able to have access to it and acquire hands-on experience in this way achieving our goal of leaving an educational legacy in order to inspire more space and radioamateur projects. As part of the satellite, the students have designed a biological experiment to run on-board the satellite which aims to study the behaviour of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells under the effects of microgravity and radiation. The design and development of all activities related to the main mission are carried out by students of our team and all related documentation is published with open licenses. Proposing a UHF downlink using GMSK at 10 kbps and an S Band downlink using OQPSK at 220 kbps. Planning a launch in Q4 2027 sponsored by ESA. More info at https://acubesat.spacedot.gr/
