Headline Details: The BCON-2 experiment is hosted on a NearSpace 0.5U ThinSat satellite bus. The bus provides electrical power. The BCON-2 mission goal is to demonstrate a method for increasing data downlink time by transmitting to receive-only ground stations operated by independent amateurs and hobbyists, specifically stations part of the SatNOGS Network. This allows use of lower cost and complexity RF systems while increasing useful downlinked information as compared to using only command stations for downlinking data. Reducing complexity can increase the likelihood of mission success, especially for novice satellite teams not yet adept at managing risk across multi-domain projects such as spacecraft. To support the mission’s goal of collaborative downlinks, any amateur will be able to participate in the experiment by configuring and scheduling downlink sessions. Similar to a store-and-forward concept, these scheduled transmissions will be intended for reception by the scheduling amateur’s station or by a SatNOGS ground station. These downlink sessions are amateur-configurable for transmit power and baud rate to facilitate experimentation. From time to time the university team will command the payload out of “amateur open” mode to “exclusive mode” to perform maintenance as necessary. A secondary experiment will be a technology demonstration of a compact ADCS system of magnetorquer coils and controller, developed by the University of Luxembourg. Proposing a UHF downlink using various FSK and BPSK data rates plus CW. Planning a SpaceX launch from Vandenberg in February 2026 into a 550km 97 degree orbit.
