Headline Details: A 2U CubeSat. The QMSat mission is to demonstrate the feasibility and use of a new technology of quantum magnetometer (the payload, developed at the University of Sherbrooke by a postdoctoral student in electrical engineering) based on a nitrogen-vacancy diamond, which would allow 3d vectorial measurements of the earth’s magnetic field with a resolution that is estimated to be 2 orders of magnitude better than traditional, 1-axis magnetometer. The goal of the mission is to launch a shrunk version of a quantum magnetometer prototype adapted to space conditions (Payload), recover the data from the Payload through the on-board computer, and send these data back to earth to be published on the QMSat website. The success of the mission resides in acquiring meaningful samples of the magnetic field using the quantum magnetometer with a resolution close to the earthbound prototype, successful transmission of these samples back to earth and displaying the data on an earth’s map on the QMSat website. Therefore, the QMSat mission can be defined in several parts: the payload, the satellite (designed to acquire, process and send samples for an estimated lifespan of more than a year), the communication between the terrestrial base and the latter as well as social efforts. Satellite structure, power management and communication methods are also a major part of the challenge. Being able to acquire, process and successfully send a single set of meaningful samples back to earth, the mission will be considered a success. Note that this project is mainly supported by the Canadian Space Agency (ASC) which offers a grant over three years (the duration of the project) to bring it to term. We would like to mention that, another major objective of the QMSat project is to raise to provide industry experience to undergraduated and graduated student involved in this project, as well as to raise the awareness of as many people as possible, through activities (University activity, TV shows, outreach events, etc) and presentations, to the world of aerospace and the multiple spheres of engineering.
