Headline Details: BarnacleSat, similar in size to a Cubesat, it will be placed in a low earth orbit typical of the secondary booster stage used on a GPS deployment mission. The satellite will be launched using a Delta II Launch Vehicle. BarnacleSat will be released from the RocketPod™ on a 1 km space tether stored in the satellite itself. BarnacleSat will play a dual role in the mission as both a deployment aid for the tether and an onboard GPS system will track telemetry on the deployment of the tether.Within the first phase of the mission, the satellite will take high resolution GPS data on the deployment of the tether and transmit the telemetry back to the ground station for analysis. Once the tether is fully deployed, the secondary mission of tracking the de-orbit effects of the conducting tether will be monitored using ground based radar. The satellite will use the 2 m APRS beacon frequency to transmit telemetry information. Amateurs can tune to this frequency and automatically receive telemetry from BarnacleSat without actively pinging the satellite and also track the satellite as it passes over their location. Circular orbit with an altitude of approximately 700-800 km, period of 108 minutes and an inclination of 35°-45°.
