Headline Details: A 3U CubeSat. As for many university satellites, the mission objectives of the SONATE satellite can be divided into two parts, research and education. On the research side, the satellite will perform technology demonstration experiments of payloads aiming for higher autonomy as well as of attitude determination and control hardware, which are all being developed at the University of Würzburg. On the education side, the satellite will serve as foundation for different aspects of the university’s aerospace and computer science engineering program. In the context of practical courses, theses or as student assistants, students participate in the development of the above mentioned technology demonstration experiments as well as of components of the satellite bus or the ground segment. Communication with amateur satellites is also part of the compulsory courses every student has to attend. This includes lectures on amateur radio in general and in particular the operation of amateur satellites, as well as live communication with in-orbit amateur satellites via the university’s 70cm/2m ground station. Therefore, this mission of course includes opportunities for the students to build and operate radio communication systems of space and ground segment systems. Such a system is the amateur payload of this satellite, a transceiver which is currently built by several students over the course of their theses. This transceiver will initially provide regularly SSTV downlinks with images from one of the on-board cameras. Other thesis for instance address the antenna deploy mechanism. Proposing a VHF downlink for the SSTV and a UHF telemetry downlink using 9k6 GMSK/GSFK with AX25. No launch details are available but planning 2019 deployment into a 600km SSO.
