Headline Details: The OSIRIS-3U CubeSat mission will provide in situ and remote sensing measurements of the spatial characteristics of stimulated (heated) ionosphere, which will be correlated with ground-based measurements to better understand variable space weather conditions and phenomena such as ionospheric irregularities. The mission objectives are: Primary Objectives: 1. Provide in situ and remote sensing measurements of the stimulated (heated) ionosphere produced by ground-based heaters 2. Characterize the spatial extent of the heated region “bite out” 3. Correlate in situ and remote sensing heated ionosphere measurements with ground-based measurements including incoherent scatter radars and ionosondes 4. Develop the aerospace workforce by training students in space systems engineering through hands-on projects Secondary Objectives 1. Investigate anomalous electron number density enhancements in the night-time ionosphere 2. Correlate in situ and remote sensing measurements at Arecibo’s conjugate point with heating events The use of the ionospheric heater at Arecibo, and if available the heaters at HAARP and EISCAT will allow the OSIRIS-3U mission to mimic natural ionospheric irregularities at defined locations and times, as well as perform research on active experiments. The OSIRIS-3U CubeSat hosts a combination of instruments to map ionospheric irregularities over Arecibo using a Langmuir Probe built by The Pennsylvania State University and two remote sensing instruments: the Coherent Electromagnetic Radio Tomography (CERTO) beacon provided by The Naval Research Laboratory and the Compact Total Electron Content Sensor (CTECS) in collaboration with The Aerospace Corporation. The OSIRIS-3U CubeSat mission is designed to function in a circular or low-eccentricity orbit between 300 and 450 kilometers and inclination between 35° and 70°. The on-orbit operation is adaptable and flexible because the OSIRIS-3U satellite can be commanded, via command uplink, to focus on emergent phenomena and facility capabilities. OSIRIS-3U data will be coordinated with ground-based stations doing measurements such as incoherent scatter radar, digisondes, and riometry. Proposing to use a UHF downlink with data rates up to 38k4 and GMSK modulation. Planning a Nanoracks deployment H1 2017 together with ASTERIA, LAICE, RBLE, DISCOSAT-1, OPAL, AOSAT ** A downlink on 437.505 MHz has been coordinated**
